The Most Dangerous VPS Configuration Mistakes

Running a VPS gives you power and control — but also responsibility. A few simple mistakes can expose your system to attacks. Here are the top misconfigurations to avoid on your Linux VPS.

1. Leaving SSH on port 22

Hackers scan port 22 constantly. Change it immediately:

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Port 2222
PermitRootLogin no

Use SSH keys instead of passwords for access.

2. No firewall enabled

Activate ufw to control inbound traffic:

sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow 80,443,2222/tcp
sudo ufw enable

3. No Fail2Ban protection

Fail2Ban automatically blocks brute-force attacks. Install it with:

sudo apt install fail2ban

4. Wrong file permissions

Never set 777 on your web files. Use proper ownership and permissions:

find /var/www -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find /var/www -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

5. No automatic updates

Enable unattended upgrades to stay protected:

sudo apt install unattended-upgrades
sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades

6. No backups

Always have off-site backups. At VPS1DOLLAR, automated FTP backups are included by default — protecting you even if your VPS fails.

7. Unnecessary services running

Disable old protocols like Telnet or FTP:

sudo systemctl disable telnet
sudo systemctl disable ftp

8. Bad SSL/TLS configuration

Use Let’s Encrypt and test your domain on SSL Labs for an A rating.

9. No monitoring

Install Netdata or GoAccess to monitor your system in real time.

10. Weak root password

Use at least 16 characters with mixed symbols, or better — disable password login entirely and use SSH keys.

Conclusion

Your VPS is only as secure as its configuration. Following these best practices will block 99% of attacks. If you prefer a system pre-secured out of the box, choose VPS1DOLLAR — all VPS plans come hardened and monitored.
